patience

May 15, 2009

I have experienced a lot of time being angry and upset after dealing with some ignorant. They do things only in their way of thinking neglecting others. But today’s daily devotional taught me something. It is mentioned that one needs to be patient dealing with those kind of people. One needs to consider that they haven’t ‘reached the level’. Everyone is in each unique phase of life so never use the same standard. Or I can say that there is no standard.

Understanding this helps us to understand every people in a better way. So.., be patient.

stupid yet sure

May 14, 2009

I’ve met some people who are lack of knowledge actually yet sure about something more than people with deeper knowledge. Maybe the proverb about ‘coconut tree’ is true. The smarter, the more someone to become low profile but empty can has louder voice. Dealing with this kind of guys, I must use special way to communicate. It’s like I show them that I don’t like to be underestimated. I don’t like to be pressed. It doesn’t mean that I want to show them that I am smarter or else. It’s just that I don’t like to be considered stupid. I believe everyone should respect everyone else. It’s just a matter of respect. Unfortunately they don’t understand this. They just want to show that they’re smarter, they’re better while actually they are not.

Today I met a woman who is so proud of herself. Her way of speaking was terrible for me since it made me feel underestimated. It even made me feel upset. In my mind, I (representing DSP-RTG ITB) will buy what she sells for about more than 100 million rupiahs, and it will make her shop receive a lot of money. But she was not polite. She didn’t show me respect at all. If it is not because of the deadline, I really want to find another shop if it is possible.

Communication is a matter of respect, you give someone your respect, you’ll receive theirs. Quiet simple but rarely understood.

852 Watt hour per day

May 12, 2009

We only concern with the telecommunication infrastructure hence we reduce the specification of the devices until the minimum requirement for establishing the basic system. It means we only need these devices:

  • Radio & Antenna (12V/ 1A)
  • Switch (7.5V/ 1A)
  • IP-Phone (5V/ 1.2A)
  • TS-7200 (5V/ 2A)

Calculating each device’s power consumption, multiplied by the duration (in hour = 24 hours), we finally get the total energy consumption per day about 852 Watt hour per day. Now, the issue is how to design the power generation system to answer this challenge.

One possible way is by using solar system, but what is the specifications? I mean how big the panel should be, how big the battery capacity should be and which voltage regulator should we use? Let’s solve it!

growing up means becoming ignorant?

May 10, 2009

Currently I stay in a dorm where a lot of the members are students of university. Most of them are younger than me, maybe 2-4 years younger than me. Recently, I can feel that the people here consider being exist as an important issue. I was thinking, was I also like that few years ago? Yes I think.. Can’t think about it objectively actually.. I don’t know.

The now version of me think that such issue is not important anymore. Or maybe my current important issues are now different with my past important issues.

Have I already become an ignorant? Nope, definitely not..

extreme imagination

May 10, 2009

During my late lunch, I was imagining if there is a rural far far away village which just received a set of computer from the central government. It is a part of rural-development program in the country. Ironically, there is no one in the area which has ever seen any computer, not even any electronic device. The first day the computer arrives, all people gather in a big hall (well.., in the city you call it ‘city hall’). Everyone stares at the computer curiously, and only the chief who is able to be near to the computer.. closely watching the trainer from the central government operating the computer, showing what it is capable of..

There is no electricity in the village, so never imagine an internet connection. But by using solar panel, battery, protection system and high-gain antenna, the computer can get access to the internet from a city nearby (well.. it’s not near actually.. it takes hours to reach there). So the chief and all the people start seeing many pictures which is uncommonly seen by them. They can even listen to the music which is broadcasted through the internet, they can watch moving pictures, they hear people speaking with different languages inside the small box which the operator always mentions as a ‘monitor’. Even the operator always tells the chief never to touch the LCD monitor, but the exciting chief always forget about the warning.

Seeing it as a new interesting (or maybe magical) thing, the people just simply love the computer from the first sight. Trying to complete the installation, the operator finally registrates the computer and he asks the chief what the computer’s name should be. He can actually just fill it by himself without asking the chief, but he just tries to be nice with the people. Asked by the question, the chief takes it seriously and stands suddenly facing to his people..

‘my beloved citizen, let’s decide what name should we give to this magical box’. Of course every person mentions many names. Some people even start fighting and forcing everyone around to accept what they’re thinking as a good name. Trying to avoid more fight between his people, he hold a big meeting. In the meeting, he chooses some people which he thinks as a quiet educated people (compared to the other). The chosen people are asked to mention one name each and make a speech in front of all the village members telling why the ’small box’ should have that name. After all the speeches, all the citizens must vote. Every persons must choose one between those names. Some people cheat, unsatisfied people do not vote, and many other things happen just like the election in a country.

Finally they have one name and the chief tells the operator the name. The operator of course regrets his question. He mutters while he was waiting for the speeches and vote. Being tired and being seriously want to go home as soon as possible, the operator wants to finish his task as soon as possible. Being hasty, finally he asks the chief where the computer should be located…

But then he suddenly realizes his mistake.. The chief ask his people this question.. and you can imagine what happens next…

DARN! (the operator mutters)

Photo

May 10, 2009

Yesterday I watched a Korean movie. The movie describes that photos could remind us of the good old memories. I absolutely agree with this. A photo can directly touch your heart while you’re seeing it. But actually there are many categories in photography. Usually I took photos based on the desire to get the bring-back-memories-photos. That’s why most of my photos consist of human-interest and landscape photos.

but since I live in the city, I am quiet often being lack of idea about what objects I’m going to take. Definitely need aspirations..

clueless of things to do

May 9, 2009

I was thinking to search an external HDD, but then I thought.. “is it really needed right now?” Well, in the future it will be, for keeping my pictures collection from exceeding my notebook’s storage limit. Anyway, that time I brought no money, so I just walked away…

Then I remembered that I need hangers for my clothes. I was looking for it and I found a few.. but it was too expensive.. so.. forget about it..

After that I was there, with a feeling such as : “what am I supposed to do during this weekend?”

clueless.. nothing…

time-frequency domain

May 8, 2009

I am having difficulty of doing simulation of time-frequency domain based algorithm of Blind Source Separation. All the algorithms I concerned with in my past research are all time-domain based algorithms yet I have never experienced the making of any time-frequency domain based algorithm. But as far as I know, in concern with real-world signals, one way to separate sources from its mixtures is by using time-frequency domain based or frequency domain based algorithm. I wonder how to do it and I just asked my friend (and also a future Professor), Muhammad about this via e-mail. I hope I’ll receive reply from him soon and get understanding from his mail.

Japanese laboratory

May 8, 2009

The thing I like from a Japanese laboratory is its comfort. It has kitchen, sofa, big multi-purpose table, nice air-conditioning system, etc. It also has scheduled tea-time, parties, each member’s birthday celebration so that every member of the lab considers it as a second home. Here in the DSP laboratory of ITB, me and Reza (both have experienced one year living in Japan) are trying to make this laboratory as comfort as we can. Of course, there is no kitchen and sofa within here yet is there any change we can make, we’re trying to do so.

At least we have a small dispenser with many coffee, tea, sugar, milk supply surrounding.. =)

salt and chili

May 7, 2009

Once I realized that there is a connection between spicy food and hypertension, I decided to change my diet. Of course everyone knows that eating too much salty foods leads to hypertension but does everyone realize that actually spicy foods have the same effect? I don’t have any scientific proof but I have stopped eating spicy foods (or drastically reduced the consumption of them) and my blood pressure becomes normal. Yes, I know, there are many factors which lead to hypertension but please let me expose here, in my own blog, that hey! there is a serious connection here…

My girlfriend’s family members have low blood pressure and they hate spicy foods. My father and sister dislike spicy food, well my sister does but my father rarely eats spicy food, both of them have low blood pressure! In other side, me and Mom LOVE spicy foods and both of us have high blood pressure. Do you see the connection here?

Well, I can say that I still love spicy foods but if it is possible, I prefer not to eat one, for the sake of long life living. Maybe you’d try?
